Highlights of The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
A land of arid desert and scorched mountains, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia conjures up all the romance and adventure of the golden age of discovery. The only country on the Arabian Peninsula with a foot in both the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf, the birthplace of Islam is one of the most difficult and enigmatic countries on earth to visit. Beginning in the capital Riyadh, this astonishing journey takes us deep into the heart of its ancient landscapes, visiting sites that few travelers from beyond the Arab world have ever seen. Blessed with a remarkable cultural heritage, we will visit spectacular World Heritage sites, traverse some of the world’s finest desert scenery, discover the beautiful Ottoman houses of historic Jeddah and marvel at the remote mountain villages of Abha and the south-west. This is a tour like no other, offering a glimpse into one of the world’s most misunderstood and least known countries that is certain to appeal to those who are drawn to destinations with a difference.
A chance to visit the spiritual birthplace of Islam • Visit the World Heritage sites of Diriyah and the petroglyphs near Hail .Marvel at the stunning desert scenery around Al Jawf . Discover the stunning mountain heritage of Abha . Enjoy the cultural highlights of Jeddah and Riyadh Accommodation: As an overall ethos, wherever possible we aim to use characterful accommodation that enhances the overall travel experience, not just offers a bed for the night. This can obviously vary dramatically from country to country and from trip to trip. On this particular trip we will be in comfortable hotels throughout although it should be noted that conventional tourism is almost non-existent in Saudi Arabia and so service levels may not be comparable with other countries in the region. Please note that the accommodation mentioned in the itinerary is intended as a guide only and is always subject to availability.
On this tour we will use minibuses and domestic flights.
Given the extreme summer heat of the desert, November to March is definitely the optimum time for visiting Saudi Arabia. Typically, you can expect daytime temperatures to reach mid/late 60F with night times being surprisingly cool, often in the single digits. Rain is rare although not unheard of! Is this trip for me? It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. Please therefore take time to read the dossier carefully. All our tours are graded to give an overall picture of the trip, but these are only guidelines and you should check the daily itinerary. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office. Key Aspects to Consider: Being a deeply very conservative country, Saudi Arabia is likely to be different from many other destinations to which you may have travelled. There are many dos and don’ts but the ones that might be considered to hold the greatest sway over your decision as to whether this is the right trip for you are as follows:-
With its gleaming bay fronting the Gulf of Oman in the north and set against the dramatic Western Al Hajar mountain landscape towards the south, Oman’s capital of Muscat is a port city like no other in the Middle East. The concave shorefront peering out across the water creates an image reminiscent of the French Riviera, whilst the old town’s imposing mosques, narrow winding streets and centuries-old souqs offer a reminder of the city’s long Islamic history.
Muscat is also is city of contrasts, with an ever-expanding Central Business District and lively port area forming two of the main driving forces behind the country’s emerging economy. Although overlooked by many as a mere gateway to enter the country, Muscat deserves more time, with a sturdy list of cultural and historic sites providing ample reason to stay for that little bit longer.
Using insights into travel patterns, the Global Destinations Cities Index ranks the 132 most visited cities around the world. Although it is more than just a travel tracker, as ‘the index aims to deliver a deeper understanding of how people move around the world and speaks to the importance and prominence of the world’s cities as homes, destinations and engines of growth,’ explains an article on Emirates 27/7.
Dubai has always been on the radar for its tourism interest, but for many years, this city was merely a stopover destination. Over the years it has dedicated time and resources to becoming one of the top tourist destinations in the world, and has propelled itself to the top of the list in a short time. According to the research, it sat in eighth position in 2012 and seventh position in 2013, and fifth position in 2014. London topped the list in 2015, with second and third place going to Bangkok and Paris respectively, and Dubai taking fourth position.
According to the study, by the end of 2015, Dubai would have predicted to have welcomed over 14.3 million visitors, which is an impressive increase of 8%, compared to the previous year’s results. Owing to the fact that it is still a preferred stopover city, it still currently receives some of the highest visitor numbers for overnight stays. There are various activities that one can experience in Dubai in under 24 hours – everything from visiting the Burj Khalifa (the tallest building in the world) to heading out in a 4X4 for a desert safari, to enjoying a dinner in some of the best hotel restaurants hosted by celebrity chefs, like the Bread Street Kitchen and bar hotel restaurant, owned by Gordon Ramsay.
